It begins like sunshine after a warm summer rain – lightness and the voice of Delphine Maillard: close and unpretentious, sensual and light, calmly catchy, she soars over the rhythmically sophisticated sounds of her music. Delphine Maillard is French and has lived in Berlin for over 10 years. Her second studio album will be released on October 02, 2020. A lot has happened since her debut in 2015. The trained jazz bassist has become a mother. The pieces on her new album captivate with the musical density of the arrangements, without losing the lightness of her debut. She spreads an airy carpet of sound, carried by the subtle lyricism of her lyrics. The playfulness of the debut album has given way to clarity and calm. And in everything resonates love, trust, closeness. Being in love has turned into love.
Delphine Maillard writes about love that is greater than itself – the love between a mother and her child, or the love for the one person she trusts completely. In the piece "Paris," vulnerability is palpable; the shock after the terrorist attack in the Bataclan is deep-seated – she sings of the calm after the incomprehensible, of a sadness without consolation: "Paris, mon coeur, Paris, ma douleur, Paris, je pleure, Paris" ("Paris, my heart, Paris, my pain, Paris, I cry, Paris"). Delphine Maillard writes her own lyrics and compositions. Her flowing, dance-like melodies are carried by the bass and delicate percussion that caresses the sounds and never takes itself too seriously. The guitars are the defining element. They climb effortlessly and lightly through the soundscapes, supporting them at the same time. This second album oscillates between chanson, folk, and jazz. It is calm and rhythm in one and has the gentle clarity of an embrace. On her second album, she gives us eleven French songs which, with their musical and linguistic virtuosity and their touching familiarity, seem like an island in this time – a possibility of closeness and encounter.
