The album title, "Bachiana," is a reference to Heitor Villa-Lobos's "Bachianas Brasileiras." It also includes pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Alessandro Marcello, Charles Gounod, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and Leonard Cohen. As this list of composers demonstrates, genre affiliations are fairly irrelevant. Jazz musicians have always used either current hits or pieces they simply liked.
Anything improvised over can be jazz. The language of Johann Sebastian Bach can become the dominant element. Bach influenced musicians across all genres. He is not only one of my favorite composers, but he was also a great improviser. This, as we know, is the essence of jazz.
