elb HANG musik was founded in late 2016. It is (currently) a solo project by the versatile Hamburg-based drummer and handpan player Stefan Wiegand. Almost from the beginning, he has also composed music himself, and since the 1990s, he has also composed a great deal of music for theater. As a young adult, he was a choir singer and, as such, participated in several recordings. In the early 1980s, he taught himself to play the drums and co-founded jazz groups. Later, he played in jazz-rock/fusion groups, pop and rock bands, gala and Top 40 combos, and musicals.
When he first saw a Hang in the summer of 2004, it was a decisive turning point in his musical life. Since 2005, he has been playing the Hanghang (plural of Hang) himself, and since 2020, the voluminous Shellopan. At the end of 2009, he founded the HANG & BASS PROJECT, initially a studio project with Hanghang and electric bass. In 2011, the album "Hang Pop!" was released, featuring 14 original compositions and renowned guest musicians such as Stefan Maus (sax) and Martin Drees (bass). "A lavishly produced, original record with great attention to detail," wrote the trade magazine Bass Professor. "An exciting project that surprises with new sounds!" commented the city magazine OXMOX. From 2012 to 2016, the HANG & BASS PROJECT existed as a live project and an acoustic duo with double bass.
elb HANG musik released its first album, "hang 'n' bass," in 2017. As the title suggests, it thrives on the interplay between hang and double bass and features a highly diverse instrumentation. With his latest album, "into the arctic," released in 2021 on Timezone, Stefan arranged and produced his own live music for a 2020 reading by author Petra Krumme about her nine-month stay with the Gwich 'in in the northwestern Canadian Arctic.
He is also a drummer/percussionist/hang player in the outstanding chanson-pop band "Evantgarde," which released its debut album in 2019, also on "Timezone." elb HANG musik also offers an entertaining live solo program that is continually being expanded. The result is a new form of musical expression: composed, sometimes improvised, melodic, percussive music for shellopan and hang.
