The washboard has a long tradition as a rhythm instrument in the blues. But what Greyhound's Washboard Band does with it is unique in the music world. Washboard Wolf, arguably Europe's only professional washboard player, has created a unique rhythm machine from a hand-fluted washboard, a bass drum over 100 years old, and various household items. He operates it with thimbles or whisks, producing sounds that an ordinary drummer could hardly imagine.
The combination of Greyhound George's electric guitar and Andy Grünert's blues harp creates an irresistible groove that makes the band special. Their style is firmly rooted in traditional Mississippi and Chicago blues, yet Greyhound's Washboard Band has consistently found its own musical path. Hooker boogie meets melodic ballads, Chicago shuffle meets pounding funky beats, and original, humorous, and contemporary songs sit alongside well-known classics. Everything is dynamically and authentically performed on stage. This is what modern blues might sound like in a parallel universe.
Greyhound's Washboard Band won the "German Blues Challenge 2017." In January 2018, the band reached the finals of the world's largest blues competition, the IBC in Memphis, Tennessee, and performed at the famous Orpheum Theatre—a feat previously achieved by only two German bands in the IBC's nearly 40-year history. Performances in Germany, Norway, Portugal, Luxembourg, and Switzerland followed.
Greyhound's Washboard Band was founded in 2015 by Waschbrett Wolf and Greyhound George as a duo. Andy Grünert joined the trio in early 2017 with his blues harp, completing the line-up. Their album "Street Corner Blues," featuring exclusively acoustic instruments, was recorded in early October 2017 and nominated for the "German Blues Award" in 2018.
Now, in 2024, the band is on the Timezone label and working on a new album that does justice to their unheard, idiosyncratic sound. The journey in search of the magical blue note continues!
