JOE BENNICK

Joe Bennick is a singer-songwriter with a deep love for language and atmosphere. His music moves between folk, pop, and indie, driven by compelling lyrics and catchy melodies. Between soulful and rousing, dreamy and danceable, he carves out his own unique niche within the singer-songwriter spectrum – not only musically, but also literarily. His songs, fiction, and poetry are expressions of an artistic output characterized by its complexity and depth.

Even during his student days, Bennick played on small stages and as a street musician in numerous band and solo projects, until he released his debut album, "in close distance," on his own label, BlauTon Records, at the end of 2019. The CD was received overwhelmingly positively and laid the foundation for further projects.

In 2021, his first poetry collection, "Entfernungen" (Distances), was published. In it, Bennick juxtaposes the (English) song lyrics from his debut album, "in close distance," with the underlying (German) poems. He also implemented this concept with his second album, "blossom and gloom," released the same year on Timezone Records. The booklet again connected his lyrics and music—thematically exploring the tension between stagnation and change. For this work, Bennick received the German Rock and Pop Award in the categories of "Best Solo Singer - Original Composition" and "Best Booklet."

With his winter program and the accompanying CD "winter" from 2023, Joe Bennick extends a special invitation to the listener. His own poems are juxtaposed with musical settings of literary texts by authors such as Erich Kästner, Theodor Fontane, E.E. Cummings, Anne Dorn, and E. Marlitt. The pieces explore themes of loneliness, silence, inner coldness, and long nights—motifs that are not limited to winter but are timeless. With sensitivity, Bennick blends lighthearted and contemplative tones into handcrafted songs of poetic depth. He was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award in the "Singer-Songwriter" category for this album.

In "blossom and gloom," the song "Drowning Man" also references the biography of his great-grandfather, the architect Otto Bartning. Bartning's world tour served as inspiration—as did the so-called emergency church program, which he initiated after World War II and which resulted in the construction of churches throughout Germany. In his memorial project "Bennick Meets Bartning," the musician brings this unique story to life through his great-grandfather's buildings, weaving together family and architectural history, background information, and anecdotes into a highly acclaimed and sensitive tribute.
Besides music, Joe Bennick also writes prose. His novel "Erlensee," published in 2016, is now in its second edition and available as an audiobook read by the author, and has been equally well-received by critics and readers. The story of a father-son relationship raises questions about inherited guilt and responsibility between generations – with autobiographical elements. In his reading concerts, music and literature merge into a powerful and immersive experience.
