German Record Critics' Prize
Karl Neukauf
Unmistakable: Karl Neukauf's deep, warm voice is memorable. On his fifth album, Karleidoskop, the multi-instrumentalist combines music, words, and sound – recorded, mixed, and produced by himself. Also on board are Franziska Günther and Danny Dziuk. Born near Kassel in 1982, the Berlin resident writes "New Berlin Chansons" – not for hipster Berlin, but for smokers and poets.
Love Is A Necessary Evil
Miriam Netti
On Love Is a Necessary Evil, Miriam Netti performs twelve pieces with a stylistic diversity – from jazz gems like the title track to classics like "Our Love Is Here to Stay." Accompanied by three Swedish musicians, the album was recorded live in Malmö. Highlights include "I Don't Worry About a Thing" in the boogaloo style, "Mr. Blue" as a slow 60s homage, and "The Answer" with Italian lyrics. Jazzy, distinctive, timeless.
