The threads converge in the listener's mind. This is where images and stories emerge – triggered by music. Different, completely different ones in each mind. They are based on life and listening experiences, on moods, life situations, individual sensitivities, and emotional states.
To listen to this music, do you need to know that Thomas Guitar Walter has been playing the guitar for over thirty years? That he studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen? That he recorded his first album under his own name in 2007? His second in 2009 and his third in 2016? That tours have taken him to the USA, the Philippines, Estonia, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland? That he has been on stage and in the studio with Kool and the Gang, Roy Hargrove, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Randy Brecker, Michael Gibbs, John Schröder, Johnny O'Neil, Billie Kaye and Takehiro Simizu, among others, and that he has a soft spot for Jimi Hendrix? That he has been making music with drummer Bernd Oezsevim for 20 years and that during this time they have become brothers in spirit? That he's lived in Berlin since 2010, became a father in 2017, and that he actually wanted to present this album to himself and his fans for his 2021th birthday in 40, but the coronavirus prevented it? That, on the other hand, the coronavirus brought bassist Niklas Lukassen back to Germany from the US earlier than planned, which made the recordings with the current lineup possible in the first place?
Knowing all this may give the protagonist biographical contours, but it is completely unnecessary for listening to the music, for engaging with the stories that Thomas Guitar Walter and his trio tell us.
For me, the songs on the double EP "Get Ready!" / "SixtySix" are the soundtrack to a fictional road movie. Upon hearing them for the first time, I suddenly imagine myself in a sports car. Sometimes with the top down, sometimes with the top down. My girlfriend and I drive at a moderate pace through vast, deserted landscapes, through bustling cities, dreamy villages, on winding roads through mountains, along the coast, with seagulls circling above. We drive past endless sunflower fields and enchanting-looking lakes. Most of the time, the sun is shining. Every now and then, clouds appear, soon giving way to the brilliant sunset and later to a starry night. Children play. Couples dance, dream, make love. Excitement and relaxation. We observe the hustle and bustle from the balcony of a small hotel where we are staying for the night. This trip is a break from the chaos of everyday life.
But listen for yourself. With your senses open!
