Singing moves!
The abseits choir was founded in Osnabrück in 2011, modeled on the Berlin Street Choir. The singers of this extraordinary choir are visitors to the day shelter for homeless people—people in difficult life situations—as well as volunteers at the shelter and the street newspaper abseits.
The choir sings songs that have a social context but are also intended to encourage people to change their own situation. Singing together has an undeniable positive effect on mental well-being, lifts the spirits, and creates a special sense of community. Examples of cover songs from the repertoire include "Durch die schwer Zeiten" (Through the Hard Times) by Udo Lindenberg and "Steh wieder auf" (Stand Again) by Gregor Meyle. The choir is particularly proud of its own songs, composed by members of the abseits choir.
The abseits choir sings at summer and street festivals, anniversaries, birthday parties, exhibition openings, action days for the homeless, its own concerts or church services.
