“When The Magic Hits” is the debut album by Canadian roots rock musician Adrian Sutherland.
Adrian Sutherland is a native of the Attawapiskat First Nation on James Bay, Northern Canada. He is a singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, public speaker, advocate, and the captivating frontman and founder of the band Midnight Shine. He is also a father of four, a grandfather of four, a traditional knowledge keeper, and a respected cultural leader who is fluent in Mushkegowuk Cree (his Indigenous language).
Adrian is writing his first book for Penguin Random House Canada about growing up in Attawapiskat, a remote and sometimes harsh place he still calls home. After building his own recording studio in a shipping container during the pandemic, Adrian completed his first television series and recorded tracks for his debut solo album.
After transitioning to solo projects in 2019 following three albums with Midnight Shine, Adrian's debut single, 'Politician Man,' a protest song for Canada, reached No. 1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown and won the Golden Sheaf Award for Best Performing Arts & Entertainment at Canada's oldest film festival. His next single, 'Respect the Gift,' debuted on The Strombo Show in Canada and in American Songwriter Magazine in the US in early 2021 and reached No. 1 on the radio charts in May.
Adrian cares deeply about many causes and uses his music and voice to share firsthand perspectives on First Nations issues such as contaminated water, housing shortages, food insecurity, addiction, and mental health. At a time when awareness of reconciliation is growing, he hopes Canadians will better understand each other and take further steps together.
