No room for guitarists? Ali Claudi and Martin Janneck release a new album.
Ali Claudi is one of Germany's pioneers of the electric guitar. His now sixty-year musical journey through all sorts of styles began at a time when there was rarely room for the guitar as a solo instrument in musical groups. His new song, "No Place for a Guitar Man," recounts those early days.
It begins Ali Claudi and Martin Janneck's new album, "Flowers from the Guitar Men." From the opening track, the two guitarists almost automatically knew what their CD should sound like: It had to be pop-oriented and guitar-heavy. Konstantin Wienstroer on double bass and Kurt Billker on drums provide the subtle yet effective foundation upon which Ali and Martin's incredibly diverse guitar sounds can truly unfold.
The selection of other pieces is almost like a miniature model of Ali's musical journey. The swing classic "Fly Me to the Moon" sits alongside the funk track "Sweet Emma," the rock classic "Proud Mary" sits alongside the 1950s hit "Singing the Blues." The closing track, "Flowers," was co-written by Ali and Martin. Their distinctive playing style is the common thread running through this diverse and refreshing album.
