True to the motto “Old Friends – New Band”, Cologne trumpeter Matthias Bergmann and Oldenburg saxophonist Raimund Moritz have decided after many years to realize a band project with their favorite musicians.
Hamburg guitarist Sandra Hempel, a recent member of the NDR Big Band, quickly came to mind, as did bassist Peter Schwebs, who recently returned to Hanover from New York, and drummer Christian Schoenefeldt from Oldenburg.
The CD "Moodswing," recorded in March 2019, will be released in September on Fattoria Musica Records, the label of the Osnabrück studio where the recording was made. It features primarily original compositions by the two bandleaders, such as the ballad "Stray," which Bergmann dedicated to composer Billy Strayhorn, and "One for Bob," Moritz's homage to saxophonist Bob Mintzer.
A composition each by trumpeter Bert Joris and saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi complete the album, whose music is modern and contemporary, yet always melodic and swinging.
