Captn Catfish - Origins in the key of G (12" Vinyl-Album)
Captain Catfish is the band from the Neckar Bayou region that stands for handmade music on handmade instruments. With their unique, homemade instruments, they stand out from the rest of the music scene, and their sound is as impressive as their construction. Everything is possible, everything is permitted, and everything is used.
The three-string license plate guitar's roots undoubtedly lie in the key of G. Fabian Fahr explores this key with a keen sense of touch, finding masterful riffs comparable to those of great riff masters like Keith Richards. His musical roots lie in Southern Rock. Together with Jordan Wiest from Minnesota, they find the right words; riffs plus lyrics create catchy, straightforward melodies and songs.
The five-person band's themes include fishing, travel, barbecue, and homages to fictional parallel worlds like the Old West and the glory days of the Vikings. Jordan's bass, built from a salmon crate, has just two strings, a low-frequency equivalent to a license plate guitar, which he plays simply, functionally, and with a great deal of grooviness.
That's where Tobias Langguth comes in with his 6-string winebox guitar, skillfully interweaving its sound into the overall sound, so that at times you truly feel like you're in Southern Rock, Stonesque, or even archaic-folklore territory. So, despite the consistent key, there's plenty of variety!
Percussionist Marcos Jesús Gonzáles Jiménez from Cuba also makes a significant contribution to this. He provides an authentic, wonderfully smooth Afro-Cuban son groove - very unusual and new for the cigar box scene - for most of the pieces and can be heard on the drums on other pieces.
Vocally, Fabian's distinctive and deep voice is complemented and rounded out by singer Nicole Guida. With her distinct feeling for blues and soul, she adds the perfect finishing touch.
