CHAOSBAY's 20-minute track "Tragedy No. 1" is one of the band's first releases from 2015. According to singer and main songwriter Jan Listing, it was the first song ever composed for the band. Inspired by musical role models such as PAIN OF SALVATION, DREAM THEATER, and PORCUPINE TREE, a continuous piece was composed that shines through its diverse treatment of motifs and themes, a modern, powerful production (by Dani Weber, bassist of THE INTERSPHERE), and multi-layered arrangement. This "symphonic" compositional approach would later become the band's trademark. The EP is considered (also due to some hidden references in the booklet) to the highly acclaimed debut album VASILISA, which was released in the same year. A precursor to this legendary 40-minute concept album (also available on Timezone), it also brims with instrumental fireworks, virtuoso solos, intricate rhythms, catchy hooks, and massive riffs, and shines with the multifaceted voice of Jan Listing, who growls, raps, and sings with crystal-clear ease through all octaves. Fans of STEVEN WILSON, MUSE, or SYMPHONY X will definitely enjoy this record.
