“Quand les bombes troublent les rêves” (When bombs destroy dreams) is Delphine Maillard’s third album, an album entirely in French, on which she sings her committed and emotional lyrics over subtle melodies. The Frenchwoman's music moves on the border between jazz, pop and singer/songwriting.
It's a bit like a pipe dream album, recorded live in Berlin's beautiful Bonello Studio to preserve the band's dynamic and the intensity of the moment. Guitarist Dirk Homuth remains by her side, as he has been since the first album. When war breaks out between Russia and Ukraine, Delphine writes the tracks "Quand les bombes troublent les rêves" and "This is the end of war" and contacts Ukrainian pianist Yuriy Seredin to play with her. The band is joined by Berlin-based drummer Ria Rother.
The album begins with "Mon arbre" (My Tree). Delphine plays the melody on bass guitar and sings about the madness of people who cut down the forest without understanding what they will lose. Also on the album is "L'enfant pleure," a song in which she sings about droughts and food shortages.
Delphine wrote "Quand les bombes troublent les rêves" thinking of children spending the night in air-raid shelters or subway stations. Then she dreams of the end of the war and describes a house in "This is the end of war" where people can seek shelter and bury their anger.
The beautiful "Jaloux" is the story of a friend, a tale in which jealousy blinds and hurts. For the video clip, Delphine invited dancer Dimitri Genco, a beautiful collaboration.
And then there is the happiness and hope, the dolphins in “Les yeux océan”, namely in the ocean-colored eyes of her daughter, sees. There's the lightness of a summer romance in "Chapeau de paille" and the relationships that change with the seasons in Berlin, as in "Soleil d'hiver." The musician remains ever optimistic, she believes in change, and even if it were "Le dernier jour" (The Last Day), one must live "as if we were the last ones who still have the right to love each other." With much love and daydreaming, as in this imaginary journey to "Copenhague."
Delphine is doing what she loves most: writing songs. The new album consists of 12 songs that showcase all the facets of an artist who is sometimes angry, sometimes in love, sometimes dreamy, but always full of hope.
