Dietrich Kittner - Kurzer Abriß der Demokratie oder Die Diktatur der extremen Mitte (DVD)
The Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung recently lamented, "No more political provocateurs like Dietrich Kittner are born these days." Why should they? The master still acts with insight and bite. This DVD proves it. A satirical assessment of an era, that of the dull two-thirds government coalition. Kittner, whose favorite characters are still Eulenspiegel and Schweijk, guarantees that such a situation doesn't have to lead to frustration and deadly seriousness. Buckets of scorn and ridicule. This is a blast. Popular wit can topple dictatorships, ridiculousness can break coalitions. And when Kittner sings, it gets under your skin; when he (actually) mounts the war phrase-monger, it gets truly creepy.
This DVD is not a well-balanced program recording for the open-ended entertainment spectrum of our television networks. Rather, it's a collage assembled specifically for the medium. Studio productions, live performances, references to now again shockingly topical events, and field shots combine to form a consistently logical chain of evidence. Bring the (pseudo) saints and the blockheads (West) down from their pedestals! Everything television dares not show.
Political cabaret – does that still exist? Well, hello – Kittner!
