Steffen Schiller alias – Steffen von Schiller, is a guitarist and singer who has played as a guest in countless bands, including on the biggest stages of the world, and has gained a wealth of experience, for example in the band VERWEGEN, and has taken many positive and other experiences with him from these years.
His goal was always to create his own songs and present them to the audience. He quickly realized how difficult and easy that was at the same time. Von Schiller no longer wanted to accompany other musicians' music.
In 1999, von Schiller made a rigorous cut and ended all work as a guest musician.
He founded the band VERWEGEN, which lured audiences with hard, raw songs. Von Schiller played approximately 600 concerts with VERWEGEN in six years. In 6, von Schiller established his own production company with his own studio and label, but he repeatedly found his work lacking the connection to the audience. So, in 2006, he re-founded VERWEGEN; unfortunately, the lineup changed several times in the following years. In 2010, von Schiller founded DIE FREIZEITPILOTEN as an additional band to create music close to the mainstream.
During the FREIZEITPILOTEN's studio work, the topic of new songs and lyrics came up repeatedly—how something actually comes together. Von Schiller commented: "Even as a student, I always had a piece of paper and a pen in my pocket. Even today, I walk down the street, look at the people, what they're doing, simply look around at my world, and the songs bubble out of me like a waterfall. That's how the song "Wenn es Morgen wird" (When It Comes Tomorrow), for example, came about.
It was summer, and I was returning from a European tour with my band VERWEGEN in Cologne. I dropped off another musician in Erfurt and drove into the sunrise at dawn, watching people emerge from their houses and the streets bustling with activity. I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and wrote the lyrics to the song "Wenn es Morgen wirdd" (When It Comes to Morning) on the steering wheel while driving! That's how many lyrics and melodies came about. However, I don't recommend imitating the steering wheel thing, because writing while driving...!
It's actually quite simple, says von Schiller: Walk through your world with your eyes and ears open, and you'll find them: the words and melodies that accompany your musical work. For several years, Stefan Höppner has been rocking with the FREIZEITPILOTEN on bass and vocals. In life, it's always by chance that people meet, and that's the case with Stefan, says von Schiller! Stefan has also played in many bands, primarily in Canada, but also occasionally in old Germany. Musically, the two are a very good match, as Stefan has also covered the entire spectrum of the rock business in his musical career.
Sven Finster plays the drums. He has been with the Freizeitpiloten since the beginning of 2020. Musically, he is almost a newcomer, which is also good for the band, because he is not influenced by other styles and is therefore open to everything NEW!
