The fascination of the 13-course Baroque lute lies in the immense tonal range and richness of color that this portable instrument possesses. Johann Sebastian Bach's contemporary, Sylvius Leopold Weiss, is among the composers who used this instrument particularly skillfully and sensually. Gabriele Janneck has selected some of her favorite works from Weiss's larger-than-life music and recorded them for her new solo album, entitled "Lute – Larger than Life." The album features the Sonatas in B-flat major and D minor from the Dresden manuscript, as well as the Sonata in E-flat major from the London manuscript, as well as the Tombeau for Count Logy and the Chaconne in G minor, which originates from a fragment of a duet but is often played as a solo piece. The production was funded as part of the "Neustart Kultur" program – initiated by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, with the GVL (Society for the Exploitation of Performance Rights) as the sponsor.
