Götz Rausch's fourth album will finally be released on April 5.4, 2019, via Timezone. The opening track, "So lang es einen Plan gibt," unfolds a wonderful pull and establishes the direction this musician and his band have now taken. It becomes significantly more powerful, and the ironic distance in the lyrics seems to disappear. Both qualities serve this production extremely well.
The Hamburg-born musician sings hauntingly about the impossibility of moving forward without stopping, about the futility of always having to be unique, and about how pleasant it can be to spend a day apart from yourself, to name just a few. As with previous releases, the music reveals that it was recorded live in the studio, lending the overall sound a vibrancy that is often lacking these days. Alongside piano, drums, and guitars, string sections and pedal steel guitars are cleverly incorporated, creating the impression on some tracks of moving through the faraway expanses of North America.
In summary, we're dealing with a musician who's clearly coming into his own, and from whom much more is to be expected. After listening to this album, it's hard to understand why Götz Rausch is still considered an absolute insider tip. Even if he may not have much interest in leaving a big mark, one would wish him that and hope so.
