When a band calls itself "left-wing, green, and filthy system sheep," it's hard to deny their political stance, but anyone checking out JUAKALI's online performance sees a lot of fun, friends, and very likeable guys. Everything is true. Just like the next cliché that the three of them serve up musically. A trio likes to stand for straightforward, direct, and high power... Powerful, dirty garage punk rock. Too fast for stoners, not enough of a Seattle sound for grunge, but certainly contemporary alternative rock that likes to question genre boundaries with a glance in the rearview mirror. The voice is distinctive and certainly gives JUAKALI its own distinctive touch and a high level of recognition.
About three years ago, the Berlin-based group met on the RAW site, a hotbed of music, partying, and alternative culture. This is reflected in JUAKALI's short résumé: After numerous concerts in Berlin's underground, the band used the pandemic-free period to record their debut album. The trio quickly established themselves as the "pre-pre-pre-Metallica band" (but that's another story), and now they're ready for the next step.
"No Choice" seems like one of those albums you can put on repeat and just enjoy listening to loudly. Good songs, catchy, yet raw and scratchy. There's a lot of '90s guitar sound. Hard, boisterous, forward-rolling songs. Guitar, bass, and drums are the foundation. You don't need anything more.
