Weeds aren't loved by everyone. They find their place, they bloom wherever they want. And they never die: Yerba mala nunca muere – that's true in German as well as in Spanish, in Hamburg as well as in Puerto Rico.
"I've always tried to live up to other people's expectations and still remain myself," says Judith Tellado. "But that's impossible. At some point, I understood that. And I understood that I have a responsibility, to myself and to art: I don't have to be nice—I have to be honest. Even if not everyone likes it, I am simply the creature that I am."
Judith Tellado was one of the discoveries of 2014. She had already added more than a few splashes of color to the St. Pauli music scene with her unique and idiosyncratic blend of jazz, bolero, and singer-songwriter influences. And her album "Under Neon Stars" ultimately resonated throughout Germany. When she looks at the album cover from that time, Judith Tellado sounds almost incredulous. "I'm no longer the woman I see there," she says, as if more than just the years have passed between Under Neon Stars and her new work, Yerba Mala. And indeed, Judith Tellado has remained true to her stylistic diversity. But her voice now tells different stories.
