"Soundtology" showcases the harmonic and rhythmic development of pianist and composer Kevin Field in collaboration with some of the most respected names in contemporary jazz. Recorded in Brooklyn, New York, it brings together two star ensemble quartets. The first features Kevin with guitarist Mike Moreno, one of the leading modern jazz guitarists of the century and two of New York's most sought-after rhythmists: bassist Matt Penman, a renowned studio musician with over 80 albums to his credit, and drummer Nate Wood, best known for his work with the Grammy-nominated band Kneebody. The second quartet features Kevin and guitarist Nir Felder, a unique voice in instrumental music. Kevin and Nir have played together in the studio and live, and this close collaboration is clearly heard on "Soundtology."
Also on board is Charles Haynes, one of the most versatile drummers of his generation, who has already worked on productions by artists as diverse as Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Marcus Miller, and Jason Moran. Bassist Orlando le Fleming rounds out the ensemble; his expertise on both electric and acoustic bass is undeniably evident on "Soundtology." Pianist Kevin Field acts as musical leader with his unique approach to composition and improvisation. His integrative approach ensures that the two quartets interact excellently with one another. "Soundtology" is musical tension and release that crosses different genres and is both stimulating and captivating, thus strengthening the relationship between performer and listener.
