In their thirteen-year history, the Kilkenny Band has always described themselves as an "Irish folk" band. Over the years, however, their repertoire has always included numerous Scottish classics, so in 2020 the band felt it was long overdue to compile a themed album consisting exclusively of Scottish songs. In addition to traditional classics such as "Loch Lomond" and "The Skye Boat Song," which became famous primarily through the trio "The Corries," the record also includes four cover songs by the Scottish cult band "Runrig." As always, the Kilkenny Band impresses with its three alternating lead vocals.
Band founder Jascha Kemper sings the witty storytelling, Dennis Fehlauer gives you goosebumps with his moving ballad voice and pure ecstasy in the Silly Wizard cover of "Donald MacGillavry," and Julie Ann Cimino-Boyle once again showcases the full range of her exceptional voice, lending new facets to some songs that in the past were almost exclusively sung by male voices. Compared to the Kilkenny Band's previous CDs, "Colours Of Scotland" is somewhat more ballad-oriented, in keeping with their annual church tour, but fans certainly don't have to miss out on the usual virtuoso solos on banjo and mandolin, which are now joined by Stephan Niebler on accordion. With a total of 16 tracks, the album offers a colorful bouquet of diverse Scottish soundscapes and brings the Highlands directly into your living room.
