In 2009, Lutz and Kati, the founders and leaders of the band Luka, met by chance at a party where Kati was singing. Lutz, who heard her there, was so captivated by her voice and appearance that he immediately made plans to collaborate. Just a few days later, the two were writing their first original songs.
In the summer of 2010, the duo toured Ibiza for three weeks. Inspired by the success of their musical journey, they wrote more songs and soon realized that a perfect performance required a band. Growing from a duo to a seven-piece, they entered the studio for the first time in 3, with a second recording session following in spring 2011.
Their debut album, February Soul, is now available on Timezone. It's an album with 16 tracks, very personal lyrics, and music that shows influences from both English pop music and contemporary soul. Lutz wrote the title song, February Soul, in memory of his uncle, who died far too young. He spent Saturday evenings listening to music with him as a young adult, and to whom he says he owes a great deal. Thanks to his extensive record collection, he first encountered the Hollies, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and many other great musicians of the time. These early musical impressions audibly shape many of his songs to this day. In February Soul, probably the most personal text Lutz has written to date, Luka processes the sad occasion into a song that is nevertheless encouraging and exudes positive energy in the chorus.
This contrast between melancholic lyrics and positive harmonies is also found in the song "Dear Old Man," which features arguably Kati's most personal lyrics. A song whose lyrics get under your skin and the chorus almost seems danceable. All in all, February Soul is a very personal and mature album by a German newcomer band, with varied compositions and autobiographical lyrics, sometimes groovy, sometimes quiet and contemplative, interspersed with beautiful miniatures that invite reflection and dreaming.
