"You are thrown from one extreme to the next. After a rather meditative and minimalist introduction focused on sound, the next track is the eruption of a groove volcano. Marcel Bach then whisks you away into the world of trance-like sound compositions, which ultimately culminate in technically explosive ostinato playing. This is deliberately not a stereotypical solo drumming album, but rather a CD with 14 pure drum tracks recorded live and without overdubs, each of which stands alone and is clearly arranged according to motifs. Thus, sparse sound elements alternate with densely played groove power, slaughtering hi-hats meet percussion sounds, and swingy brushes meet rolling tom fills. The drums are sonically captured relatively naturally – no fancy effects or artificial room simulations have been used. Rather, the playing dynamics create authentic soundscapes of a drum kit equipped with percussion adds. effectively presented. Stick playing techniques are used as well as barehanded playing. 'Solo' is not a solo drumming CD that conjures up one firework after another, but rather an album built on groove and mood, which nevertheless allows the multifaceted virtuosity of Marcel Bach to shine through in his almost compositional tunes."
