LILITH'S CHURCH or the SOUND COSMOS of Moritz Götzen
Moritz Götzen, jazz double bassist, electric bassist, theater musician, and composer, creates a new sonic cosmos through interaction with sound and living environments. He presents the result with LILITH'S CHURCH. Moritz Götzen discovered the fascination of sound long before he turned to "his" instrument, the double bass. At the age of 15, he finally took his musical destiny into his own hands and, after initially playing the electric bass and piano, found the double bass to be his "second self." With the double bass, Moritz Götzen explored, filtered, and analyzed classical-traditional and avant-garde sound worlds. Ultimately, he asked himself: "How do we create something new? Do we have to throw ourselves radically into the unknown, or does it unfold naturally, as a logical consequence of our previous path? Can we create interesting things in and out of nothing, or do we simply assemble old puzzle pieces into ever-new images? Do we have to choose?"
In his search for answers, he met violinist Julia Brüssel and guitarist Jonas Hemmersbach. With his new formation, Moritz Götzen set out to find his own voice as an improviser and created an honest portrayal of his musical history, which reads something like this: "Growing up in classical, pop/rock, and punk music, then academically trained in jazz... not closing himself off to kitsch or the aesthetics of ugliness, giving space to both the physical and intellectual aspects of music. With stylistic openness and sensitivity, the jazz trio shapes the deliberately simple melodies into energetic structures. For some pieces, the band is joined by Cologne cellist Veit Steinmann, forming a quartet.
