Inspire, but don't sugarcoat things. Often positive, but sometimes also brutally honest. Finding a place in our complex world is the task of the guys from the Karlsruhe post-grunge band OX, founded in 2015. They demand this of themselves and their listeners: breaking new ground, daring to take new paths, and working through setbacks. Following their debut album "Rewind to Overwrite" (2016), "Breaking Point" is the second album by the musically audibly mature band led by singer and songwriter Simon Ochs.
With hard riffs, melodic choruses, and catchy songs, the band has now forged its own identity between 90s grunge and modern rock sounds following their stylistically ambiguous debut album. This ranges from harder songs, some of which are enriched with modern synth sounds, like "Leftover," to rhythmic, groovy rock sounds ("Never Wanted to Be Like You," "Going Down") to catchy mid-tempo rock songs ("Disappointed"). These are complemented by danceable numbers like "Breaking Point" and even a slowly building, orchestrally arranged ballad ("A New Start").
Lyrically, the band deals with socio-critical themes and interpersonal problems. The song "Fade Away" is particularly noteworthy. Introduced by acoustic guitars and a slide guitar, it subsequently develops into a true rock anthem. Mastered by Grammy-nominated sound engineer Robin Schmidt, the album is rounded off by a thoroughly contemporary, very full, powerful sound that nevertheless still emerges very transparently from the speakers. OX has found its own style on their second album and, in just under 40 varied minutes, offers modern and musically appealing rock, some of which are sure to stick in your head.
