Peter Autschbach & Ralf Illenberger - One Mind (CD)

The 2012 album "No Boundaries," recorded by Peter Autschbach and Ralf Illenberger in Sedona, Arizona, already demonstrates a unique duo style, as two masters of their craft have found each other, playing together with equal levels of intuitiveness, spontaneity, and harmony. This makes it easy for them to take their audience on a journey through sound worlds that leave no one untouched.
Autschbach and Illenberger play in such a way that the listener has the impression of a single, large, multi-stringed guitar, where it seems irrelevant which of the two is playing what.
After 18 months of brainstorming ideas, the new document of this fruitful collaboration has now emerged: "One Mind." Some of the CD's eight tracks have already been performed by the duo in concerts, and now this music is finally available on recording. The title track, "One Mind," is (like the "Last Afternoon Suite" on the CD "No Boundaries") an improvisation without any prior arrangements; all other pieces were composed with great emotional depth and with an eye toward the necessary interpretive freedom.
Peter Autschbach and Ralf Illenberger offer a 5-star menu for connoisseurs of acoustic guitar music, as the two impressively demonstrate how intense and exciting a musical dialogue between two equal partners can be. "They don't play pop, even if their melodies are catchy. They don't play jazz, even if a large part of their music is improvised. They don't play blues, even if their music has depth and soul. And they don't play folk, even if the foundation of their work is firmly anchored in tradition. What the guitar duo Autschbach and Illenberger plays sounds like completely original music, despite all the foreign inspirations and accumulated experiences. As robust as it is sensitive – virtuosic without succumbing to the madness of speed – contemporary, yet timeless. Their playing has something of the breath of vast and expansive landscapes.
