Ralph Symann – a composer who today "writes like the classics yet independently" – presents his third CD, contra.punckt: a piano concerto and a symphony. Bar Avni conducts the project orchestra of young musicians. The soloist is Nina Gurol.
He comes from a family in which intensive and active involvement with music has been a high priority for generations. He began piano lessons at an early age, and later added oboe and church organ. In addition to the inspiration he received from lessons, school orchestras, and concerts, his extensive home library, which includes classical, rock/pop, jazz, and other music, provides a fascinating "multicultural environment" that inspires him to explore the broad spectrum of diverse genres and styles.
Clear preferences soon emerged: all classical music and rock. Because Ralph Symann's love of classical music had expanded by the time he graduated from high school into a general interest in functionally harmonic music and music written in classical structures, he subsequently began composing in the traditional—"classical"—tonal language.
He acquires the necessary knowledge and skills through intensive musicological work from modern and historical specialist literature and further develops himself through in-depth analysis of the compositions of his role models.
This diachronic and synchronic perspective on centuries of composition naturally also influences his own work: He utilizes the diversity of different styles, plays with form and architecture, and is flexible in his compositional technique. However, he never violates the principles of classical formal theory and functional harmony.
