Single Celled Organism - Percipio Ergo Sum (CD)
PERCIPIO ERGO SUM is the second solo album by multi-instrumentalist and producer Jens Lueck (among others Syrinx Call, Isgaard), aka SINGLE CELLED ORGANISM.
Clearly rooted in 70s art and progressive rock, the range is broad: post rock, alternative, soundtrack, and electronic interludes, interspersed with striking rhythms and distinctive guitar riffs. A common thread running through the pieces are repeated polyphonic vocal passages and exciting solos, which, despite their complexity, never lose their melodiousness. Jens Lueck, who grew up on the piano and later performed primarily as a drummer, frequently played guitar while composing this album. The result is many unorthodox guitar parts, superbly executed by Ingo Salzmann (who contributed his own solos) and Johnny Beck, as well as Jürgen Osuchowski on acoustic guitar.
As with all of Lueck's projects, real strings were used (for the orchestral simulation in the overdub process) and Jens Lueck's partner ISGAARD once again took over the vocal parts of the female protagonist.
PERCIPIO ERGO SUM is another concept album and continues the story of the previous album, SPLINTER IN THE EYE (more on the website www.singlecelledorganism.com). The two protagonists have survived the collapse of civilization and its reconstruction and suffer – each individually, without meeting the other – from both the past and the present. Both dislike the "brave new world," but in different ways.
The focus is on the so-called TV girl with her perception of civilization, of people, of the world as a whole, because all of this is completely new to the 20-something who spent 16 years as a test subject in an isolated bunker (without any knowledge of the existence of the outside world/other people).
At its core, she is fundamentally different from other people, who are either opinionless and uninterested or are largely shaped by the Cartesian worldview (“cogito, ergo sum” = “I think, therefore I am”).
Her credo is PERCIPIO ERGO SUM (= I perceive, therefore I am), because she sees herself as part of a whole and defines herself through interaction.
The attitude of both protagonists can certainly be understood as a criticism of humanity in the age of the Anthropocene.
