Sir Bradley - During my Lunchbreak (CD)
A woman lies smoking in front of a deck of cards. Casual. Sensual. With life lived in her face. It is precisely this cool, free-spiritedness that permeates the sound of the Hamburg jazz band SirBradley. And the cover photo for their debut album, "During My Lunch Break," already radiates much of the multifaceted energy that defines this distinctive septet. Everything rises up in the highly imaginative compositions: memories and fantasies, intoxication and melancholy, lost loves and unleashed rage. SirBradley lets all these states and moods vibrate. Pulsating and demanding, with friction and drive. After all, the band's name was inspired by an encounter with the legendary professional racing cyclist Sir Bradley Marc Wiggins. The result: "FinalStraightJazz." And the musicians bring this to the forefront in an extraordinary mix of fusion, free, and modern jazz.
SirBradley is a musical collective that beautifully shatters all age stereotypes. And along the way, the artists also set some distinctly feminist milestones. Bandleader and bassist Maria Rothfuchs founded SirBradley in 2018 together with Doro Offermann (tenor saxophone), Annette Kayser (drums), and Lovis Determann (guitar), initially as a quartet. Sonja Beeh (trombone), Magdalena Abrams (bass clarinet), and Catharina Boutari (vocals) gradually joined the band, drawing influences from Blue Note jazz to avant-garde and indie pop, creating a highly charged and subtle sound.
Patterns, melodies, and improvisations create unique and idiosyncratic instrumental pieces, to which Catharina Boutari adds a completely new twist with her vocals. But with SirBradley, it's not just the voice that tells the story. Rather, each instrument possesses a strong narrative quality. This democratic principle ensures that the live audience experiences an incredibly diverse program. At Jazz Baltica, Jazz Open Hamburg, and FatJazz OpenAir, SirBradley has already generated tremendous enthusiasm – among jazz fans and far beyond. The band aims for major festivals as well as smaller clubs. "As a group, we have a responsibility to ensure that the others sound good," says Maria Rothfuchs. "SirBradley is a band that makes it easy for each soloist to break away from the ground and take flight."
