Stefan Saffer Band - New Day (CD)
Since 2013, SSB (Stefan Saffer Band) has been one of Leipzig's most interesting independent bands. Since then, the band has developed a unique style, strongly influenced by punk, classic '80s indie guitar rock, noise elements, and catchy, '60s-inspired melodies. This unusual and original sound has its origins primarily in the band's lineup.
Alongside singer/guitarist Stefan Saffer (who also writes all the songs), bassist Tom Löwe and drummer Koma Kschentz complete the SSB lineup. Stefan Saffer – known to many as a classic singer/songwriter in the interplay of American folk/country/bluegrass and who released his highly acclaimed singer/songwriter album 'Singers & Players' on Timezone in 2015 – stands for solid, knowledgeable songwriting, but also has a colorful punk/rock past (from 1986 to 1992 he was singer/guitarist of the Bamberg-based high-energy rock band Stranded Jaywalks).
Young band member bassist Tom Löwe comes from a classic metal/hard rock background, while drummer Koma Kschentz (son of Renft musician Peter Pjotr Kschentz, who died in 2005) is stylistically difficult to categorize (Leizig fans know the multitude of different bands he's played in), but his roots definitely lie in metal, punk, and hardcore. In their classic trio lineup, SSB develops a rock-hard sound, especially live, that packs a punch and is hard to compare – although enthusiastic concertgoers repeatedly drop names like Hükser Dü, Dinosaur Jr., the Clash, the Who, and the Stooges – all of which may be true influences and inspirations, but they all blend together to create a powerful synthesis of contemporary and classic independent rock styles. Melodic, catchy songs come across the stage hard, driving and with a lot of power, getting lost for minutes in dissonant feedback and noise attacks until the band returns to the song with a hard break and brings it home with a lot of verve!
