T.G. Copperfield - Snakes & Dust (CD)

With his ninth solo album, TG Copperfield, with the active support of producer and musician Dr. Will, delves deep into the world of the Wild West. Snakes & Dust tells the story of the gunslinger El Cid, who battles his demons and searches for redemption. A roots-rock opera and concept album in the style of the 9s, the record atmospherically captures the hero's inner life and adventures, turning the journey through the 70 songs into a cinematic and highly diverse experience, with images immediately conjuring up before the listener's eyes. Ideally, the album should be enjoyed in one sitting; only then does this work unfold its full splendor.

Recorded in fall/winter 2021, songwriter, singer, and guitarist Tilo George Copperfield once again gathered hand-picked musicians from the South German blues and roots scene. In addition to bassist Juergen Reiter (The Wizards), Ferdinand Jerry Roll Kraemer (Black Patti) on mandolin is featured on the album, as are members of Copperfield's Electric Band (Claus Baecher on keys, Michael Air Hofmann on backing vocals). Dr. Will orchestrates the whole thing like an old master, incorporating his influences from Tom Waits to Los Lobos and Steve Earle into the always exciting music, where all the nuances only become apparent after several listens.

This time, the recording and production relied more on gut feeling than usual. Only a few takes were used to preserve the immediacy of the live performance and convey the magic. Many acoustic instruments, such as the banjo and double bass, played a central role. Copperfield and Will approached it like modern traditionalists, experts in blues, roots, and rock and roll, using everything they enjoy most. Their years of experience and attention to detail are evident throughout Snakes & Dust. A true labor of love.
