When the sky has been dark gray for days and then suddenly the sun shines again – this is the feeling captured in "Das kleine Glück," the new album by jazz-pop singer Tania Fritz. Born in Hesse, who moved to the north after graduating, the singer envelops the banalities of everyday life with her magical, crystal-clear voice and transforms them into something beautiful with the help of clever German lyrics. What the trained musician hopes for, as she herself puts it, is for her songs to become a "medicine cabinet for the little soul's cold" for her listeners.
This warm-hearted album has a turbulent history behind it: "Always, really always," says Tania, "life got in the way." Great love, family—and then, suddenly, a severe bout of pneumonia. The illness shook everything important to the musician. "I had to rediscover myself and my voice. It was an intense, difficult time with a hard-earned happy ending." A good friend aptly called the fact that her album is finally being released a "home run after 20 years."
The message in the album's elegantly and slenderly arranged songs is all the more intense: Tania Fritz wants to promote love for life and also for oneself. For a positive attitude, despite all adversities. In "Phoenix," she sings: "Dare to be what your heart tells you." In "Die Bank," she says: "Dust off your clothes and look into the sun!" And in the title song, "Das kleine Glück," Tania promises us: "It doesn't seek you, it finds you... little happiness." Small, good thoughts, Tania believes, can lead to big, positive changes. A kind of butterfly effect of happiness!
"Das kleine Glück" (Little Happiness) brings together ten musical gems, soulful and jazzy, in which the singer's unique voice always takes center stage. Stylistically, it's sometimes reminiscent of musicians like Carole King, Pe Werner, or Annett Louisan. Producer and guitarist Uli Kringler, along with drummer Heinz Lichius and bassists Jens Wrede (electric bass) and Lars Hansen (double bass), provide the perfect musical backdrop, flawlessly gentle and elegant. Tania herself played piano and Rhodes.
Tania Fritz has created an album that has a very unique, relaxed groove, but conceals an important message in the light-footed groove of the melodies: The path to happiness may sometimes be difficult and the outlook bleak – but it is always worth continuing!
