The Orient Express has long since ceased service – but in music, it's picking up speed again. On "Transorient Express," the Transorient Orchestra, based in the eastern Ruhr region, intertwines dense rhythmic textures from jazz with Eastern rhythms, Arabic melodies, Persian timbres, and influences from the Balkans, rock, and folk. Ney, oud, santur, kopuz, and darbuka meet wind instruments, guitar, violin, and double drums. The highlight is the Transorient Suite, recorded in its entirety for the first time, with the distant city of Isfahan as its destination. A true ensemble of soloists on a journey that, despite its diversity, never derails.
