Music touches us! It can evoke emotions in us, but also associations such as images, stories, or even colors. The Russian pianist and composer Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, for example, particularly explored the phenomenon of color in his music by assigning specific colors to notes, keys, or chords and incorporating these colors into his compositional style.
For their debut CD, "Violet," the Ulf Manú Quartet chose a color as the title that is considered, among other things, an expression of spirituality, mysticism, and mystery. Ulf Manú is a seeker—not only of the higher meaning of human existence, but also of ever-new forms of musical expression. The classically trained guitarist has found his very own style through the fusion of diverse musical styles.
Just as the color violet blends contrasting hues with cool blue and warm red, Ulf Manú and his congenial fellow musicians create an exciting new cosmos of sound from apparent opposites. With their unusual line-up of recorder, guitar, bass, and percussion, the quartet seemingly effortlessly blends medieval dance music, gypsy swing, jazz, and world music, taking the listener on an associative sonic journey beyond the horizon.
