Ute Schleich & Katharina Uzal - Colori Contrastanti (CD)
Recorder player Ute Schleich and cello player Katharina Uzal form the duo Colori Contrastanti, which, with temperament, sensitivity, and practical performance knowledge, dedicates itself to a musical niche worth illuminating and exploring. They record new works for recorder and cello—all world premiere recordings, with the exception of Bernstein's Variations. 'New' here doesn't just mean 'works from the 20th and 21st centuries'—Diana Cemeryte's "Devaneio," for example, was written for this duo in 2021—but also the arrangement of Vivaldi's "Autumn" for this ensemble and the first edition of Domenichini's duets.
The CD includes works by Leonard Bernstein, Heinz-Martin Lonquich, Diana Cemeryte, Katerina Pinosova-Ruzickova, Diego Uzal, Antonio Vivaldi/Winfried Michel and Carlo Domenichini.
The significant differences between the two instruments require a constant struggle to find the best combination and an intensive interaction in terms of dynamics, intonation, articulation, and timbre. Of course, there are ways and means for these two very different instruments to communicate and interact with each other on equal terms. The name Colori Contrastanti thus describes, on the one hand, the duo's very different instrumental background, and, on the other, the colorful program, which is characterized by a wide variety of music.
The two musicians met through teaching together, and since 2015 they have enjoyed an intensive and fruitful musical collaboration, based on personal sympathy and curiosity about each other's instruments.
