Writing about Werner Nadolny means telling several stories at once. The result is a book that, of course, traces his life, but at the same time touches on the history of the Federal Republic of Germany and the development of German rock history. Of course, a story about Werner Nadolny is inevitably also a story about the legendary krautrock band Jane, which made a name for itself in the 1970s and 80s and still has a large international fan base today. Werner Nadolny was a founding member of Jane, an important composer, and a man who set standards on the keyboards. But he also experienced artistic debates and interpersonal disputes here, which this book cannot ignore. For a long time, his membership in Jane resembled an on-off relationship, the creative side projects of which would be worthy of a book in themselves.
Writing about Werner Nadolny also means talking about his illness and how he dealt with it. Nadolny suffered from multiple sclerosis (MS) for decades. Controlling this insidious neurological disease, slowing its progression, and still allowing him to enjoy life and pursue creative work—that was the second major theme in Werner Nadolny's life. He passed away on May 22, 2023, at the age of 76.
The content of this book is based not only on traditional research but also on the recollections of Werner Nadolny and many of those who accompanied him on his complex life journey. Opinions, including polarizing ones, are presented with the knowledge that there are certainly people who remember and evaluate the respective events differently.
