Barely an eternity has passed and there is already a new album from the Zydeco Playboys... JUST DO IT.
An infectious groove kicks in as soon as the first song, "Mr. Zydecos Dance," starts playing – snapping along, whistling, and bouncing off. Note: No computer-generated onomatopoeia, but real, cross-generational music with Louisiana and Downsouth basics. Everything from washboard to alligator love sounds to dried nuts is used. Accordion, electric guitar, and a straight bass and drum foundation are also included...
The album contains 12 original songs plus Chuck Berry's "Cést la vie." A rich foundation of rhythm, blues, and roll. It features Zydeco-esque songs like "Whatta kind of money do you like?", "Gros Coup," and "Backyard Lady," with fat accordion and ironic lyrics. Here's the Cajun- and waltz-influenced "Wanderlust" with beautiful slide guitar. There's Cajun French in the innovative folk-rocker "Cést tout ya" and the traditional "Choucroute a la Allemand." There's Spanish in the Tex-Mex polka "Una cerveza y dos copa de vino," and also "Lleno de vida," with magnificent bass sequences and a conga and timbale storm in the guitar outro solo. In "The Gator Groove," Dr. John peeks around the corner, starting with cool sounds and ending dynamically in a solo battle with guitar and organ. And the roots rocker "Just Do It" is on the road "on behalf of the accordion" and possibly the Los Lobos fan base. The finale, "Last Island," is completely bluesy. Choral singing is consistently provided by all band members. These are skillfully arranged songs, not just endless roots thrashing. But these aren't just short songs designed for radio either – there's always something new to discover – sounds, dialogues, odd beats! A truly diverse album worth listening to. If you love to groove – JUST DO IT!
Since 1994, the Zydeco Playboys have been one of Europe's most recognized zydeco & roots acts. This positive energy is still palpable. High sound quality guaranteed – mixed & mastered by Matthias Ulmer (Anyones Daughter, keyboardist PUR, arranger & keys HR-Kunze, Gotthardt, among others).
